Developing your Film: Story & Structure with Geoffrey Smith

Join us for an interactive coffee morning session with dual Emmy award winning director Geoffrey Smith about developing film projects, finding a narrative and a structure and working with consultants.

Is there a way to increase the emotional and psychological drama of our films? Is there a way to shoot much less material by having a clearer idea of what is needed when we begin? And is there a way to free ourselves from the tyranny of endless choice that afflicts all documentary directors? In this session, we will explore the power of story archetypes and discuss tools and ideas that you can apply to your own projects.

Geoffrey Smith is a double Emmy award winning director who was at the BBC in London for over 13 years. He has made 24 films for all the major UK broadcasters, won over 40 International awards, was listed in the New York Times Best Films list for the “The English Surgeon”, and his last two feature documentaries sold widely, had theatrical releases and screened at hundreds of film festivals across the world.

Geoffrey has several feature documentaries in development and is very much in demand as a consultant and story editor on a wide range of international projects. He is passionate about the power of documentary to reach wide audiences and to help change the world, and works intensely with directors and producers to get the very best out of their ideas and material.

In love with cinema from an early age, he is also passionate about documentary as an art form and ran the Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival in Australia for 5 years.
